Shabbat shalom dear friends π May we have a peaceful and meaningful Shabbat π May we see The Temple restored now π May the words of our beloved Torah guide us π
This week’s parsha is dedicated to the impact of Sarah’s life. We learn from Abraham lessons of mourning (eulogy, burial, shiva and looking into the future even after such loss). We see another example why we have to be careful about our promises, especially when people do it just to sound noble (promising land for free, while expecting the full price is an example of virtue signalling from our enemies).
Yet nothing is more important than teaching children to have a proper family. The task to find a bride, who is kind and generous is given to Abraham’s servant. We learn that the girl is found in the house of idol worshipers.
Yes, it’s a complicated matter. At this stage idol worshipers are persuaded by gold given as a present to the potential bride. However at this moment we hear very profound words coming out of Lavan’s mouth. His reference to the Almighty is still used in our prayers.
What has happened? Did Lavan change his ways? No. It was just a moment of inspiration. And this is my lesson today – sometimes we are looking through reels/ posts. All over sudden we see something really profound coming from unexpected places. And alas, next time we go to this source, it’s something very different.
Should we get upset? How come this influencer / celebrity / random person is so different from what we saw before? How could they betray it? No. Don’t expect idol worshipers selling their soul for gold to be consistent. This is life.
Our sages teach us to learn from everyone, but not worship them. Learn from kosher sources – we are spoiled for choice nowadays. Take on board inspiring moments from everyone. Just remember to connect with a proper teacher.
Shabbat shalom π
